Readers, welcome back! As I talked about how I will be introducing you to the Coaching Skills for online meetings we follow at Rate My Meeting, in the first post, I talked about how one should gain mutual Trust and Respect, in the second post I talked about 4-points checklist for Personal Development in meetings, in the third, I talked about 4-points checklist for Why to Focus on Asking Questions instead of Giving Advice, and today I'm back with the 4th installment from the total 6 Online Coaching Skills. So let's get to it!

It starts with mutual trust and respect, because you will only receive what you give. Then follows focus on personal development, insights driven human growth. After that comes focus on asking questions to trigger thinking processes. Succeeded by actionable advice, which means a clear breakdown of next steps towards actionable results. Then comes coaching by teaching theories to give next steps, model based structure basically. To conclude, we focus on clarification of next steps, so that there is ownership for the agreed actions.

Receiving guidance is often seen as the passive consumption of wisdom. And advising is typically treated as a matter of “good judgment”—you either have it or you don’t — rather than a competency to be mastered.

When the exchange is done well, people on both sides of the table benefit. Those who are truly open to guidance develop better solutions to problems than they would have on their own. They add nuance and texture to their thinking—and, research shows, they can overcome cognitive biases, self-serving rationales, and other flaws in their logic.

Advice has more value when it is actionable. The coachee knows what to do, and feels able to do it. Break down the advice in 3-5 sub-steps that each are doable and oversee-able. Make them building up, so that the first action triggers the next. Assure quick results, for progress. And offer your help during the process.

1) Finding the right fit

Because each request for advice is unique, reflecting a distinctive combination of circumstances, personalities, and events.

2) Developing a shared understanding

Because at this stage your primary goal as an advice seeker is to convey just enough information to grasp the problem they face, why it poses a challenge, and where you hope them to end up.

3) Break down the advice

In 3-5 sub-steps that each are doable and oversee-able so that there is no confusion between the others and yourself.

4) Keep the Ideas in Loop

And make them building up, so that the first action triggers the next to incur a flow like rhythm.

5) Advice is best treated as provisional and contingent

It should be a cycle of guidance, action, learning, and further guidance—not a fixed path forward. Offer your help during the process and after the process is complete.

Especially if the advisory process has occurred over an extended period, circumstances may have changed by the time you are ready to act.
